Denzelle Willis Jr. Obituary, Cause of Death - Warner Robins High School Shooting Suspect Identified, Denied Bond
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — A 14-year-old student accused of shooting a classmate at Warner Robins High School has been identified as Denzelle Willis Jr. and will remain in custody after a judge denied bond during his first court appearance Thursday.
The shooting happened Wednesday afternoon, August 12, inside a bathroom at Warner Robins High School. Authorities said two ninth-grade students became involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical fight. During the confrontation, Willis allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the other student in the leg.
The injured student was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A school resource officer responded quickly, applied tourniquets and remained with the victim until medical personnel arrived.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
Following the shooting, Willis allegedly fled the school on foot. Authorities later located him in a nearby neighborhood approximately half a mile from the campus and took him into custody without further incident.
Willis appeared before Superior Court Judge Katherine Lumsden on Thursday for his first court appearance.
Prosecutors said he faces several charges, including:
- Aggravated assault with a firearm
- Disrupting the operation of a public school
- Receiving stolen property
- Possession of a handgun by someone under 18
- Possession of a gun in a school safety zone
Because of the aggravated assault charge, the case has moved into Superior Court, and prosecutors confirmed that Willis will be tried as an adult.
Bond Denied
During Thursday's hearing, Judge Lumsden declined to entertain the issue of bond, meaning Willis will remain in custody at a youth detention facility.
The case could be presented to a grand jury as early as Tuesday, August 18, although that appearance could be postponed.
The allegations against Willis have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Warner Robins High School Community Responds
The shooting prompted a major law enforcement response and the closure of Warner Robins High School for students and staff Thursday. Students are expected to return to campus Monday, while school officials have made counseling resources available to help students and employees process what happened.
Authorities have credited the school's emergency response procedures and the rapid actions of the school resource deputy with helping prevent the incident from becoming even more serious.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine how the firearm entered the school.
